Ex-U of I official testifies before commission

Associated Press - June 29, 2009 8:34 PM ET

CHICAGO (AP) - A former admissions official at the University of Illinois testified today that there were students the office "wanted to deny, who we were told to admit."

Abel Montoya says those students were on a special list the school used to organize applications from politically connected students. Montoya says the school should discontinue use of the special system. He spoke in downtown Chicago to the state's Admissions Review Commission created by Gov. Pat Quinn.

Montoya says it was his job to track the list and in the last few years it had between 150 and 165 students, most from affluent high schools in the Chicago suburbs.

The university has come under fire since the Chicago Tribune last month revealed the existence of the list.
