Decatur man sentenced to 14 years in fatal crash

Associated Press - October 7, 2009 10:04 PM ET

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A Sangamon County judge has sentenced a Decatur man to 14 years in prison - the maximum sentence for which he was eligible for his part in an October 2007 car crash that killed Illinois State Trooper Brian McMillen.

Police say 28-year-old Shai-Tan Cook was driving the second car that struck McMillen's squad car as McMillen responded to a call for backup to quell a disturbance at a since-closed lounge near Illiopolis.

Circuit Judge Leslie Graves said Cook showed more remorse in the courtroom Wednesday than she had seen from him previously, but she couldn't overlook his drug-related criminal history.

A Sangamon County jury found Cook guilty last month of 5 counts of aggravated DUI and three traffic offenses. Cook will have to serve at least 85% of his sentence.
