EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - Commuters between Illinois and Missouri have another option again in crossing the Mississippi River.
The Illinois Department of Transportation has reopened the Martin Luther King Bridge linking East St. Louis to St. Louis after a shutdown of more than a week for safety reasons.
IDOT added a concrete divider and changed the span to three lanes from four lanes. It reopens with two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane. And the new lanes are wider - 12 feet, up from the previous 10 feet.
The bridge has been the site of several fatal crashes, including some where drivers crossed the center line and struck oncoming vehicles.
