Man convicted of murder for concrete block attack

Associated Press - October 23, 2009 11:24 PM ET

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A Sangamon County jury has convicted a 19-year-old Springfield man of first-degree murder for dropping a concrete landscape block on another man's head during a fight more than two years ago.

Brandon J. Nelson faces 20 to 60 years in prison when he is sentenced by Circuit Judge John Belz on Jan. 13. The jury took about two hours Thursday to convict Nelson of murdering 19-year-old Devyn Greff.

The nine-woman, three-man jury rejected the option of convicting Nelson of involuntary manslaughter, instead finding that Nelson acted knowingly when he dropped the block on Greff's head.

The attack occurred during a fight after a drunken party and witnesses testified that Greff had already been knocked unconscious by a punch from another man when Nelson grabbed the block from a neighboring lawn.
