Farmers making headway, but rain has left them weeks behind

Associated Press - November 10, 2009 7:24 AM ET

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Improved weather is causing some long but welcome days for Illinois farmers, who often put in 16-hour days as they work to bring in the harvest.

The Illinois State Water Survey says Illinois had its second-wettest October since 1895 this year - with rainfall averaging 8.9 inches statewide.

Loves Park farmer Mark Shipton says his family is three to four weeks behind in the harvest and they'll be lucky to have it all done by Christmas.

Recent sunny days mean most farmers are making headway on the bean harvest.

But some are concerned about the corn. Northern Illinois farmer John Reid says he's worried about the moisture content of his corn. He says he hopes the recent dry spell continues so some moisture is taken out before harvest.
