Durbin satisfied with mental-health care at Tamms

Associated Press - November 13, 2009 9:44 AM ET

TAMMS, Ill. (AP) - The state's only supermax prison has been called into question in recent months over inmate-isolation practices that human-rights advocates consider inhumane.

But Sen. Dick Durbin says he's comfortable with the mental-health treatment prisoners are receiving at the Tamms Correctional Center.

The Illinois Democrat toured the lockup on Thursday. Durbin says while reforms still need to be made at the Alexander County site, Tamms' ratio of 1 mental health professional for every 30 inmates is among the nation's best.

Durbin says he spoke with several inmates and believes they receive proper mental health care.
