Knox County prosecutor removed from theft case

Associated Press - November 13, 2009 5:54 PM ET

GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) - A Knox County judge has granted a motion to appoint a special prosecutor to handle the case of a county official accused of theft.

Recorder of Deeds Paula Monzo is accused of writing about $3,500 in checks on the account of the Knox County Democratic Central Committee over the past year.

State's Attorney John Pepmeyer filed a motion to remove himself from the case and appoint a special prosecutor. He said he is a potential witness in the case and a member of the organization that is the alleged victim.

Judge James Stewart granted the motion during Friday's hearing, which was attended by Monzo.

Galesburg Police reports indicate Monzo wrote checks to herself and to cash because she was having trouble paying bills and had a cocaine habit. Her next court appearance will be Dec. 16.
