Milikin prof heads bird feeding group

Associated Press - November 16, 2009 7:44 AM ET

DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - Millikin University biology professor David Horn has spent his professional career working to improve methods of feeding wild birds and improve bird safety in populated areas.

Recently, Horn has taken over as head of the National Bird Feeding Society. That group is dedicated to providing the best scientific information on bird feeding.

Horn says bird feeding is a hobby pursued by more than 50 million Americans. He says Americans spend millions of dollars on bird food as well as bird feeders, bird baths and other accessories.

Horn recently finished an extensive 3-year study on the feeding preferences of wild birds. For example, he says anyone interested in attracting a tufted titmouse needs to know that the tiny birds prefer whole peanuts and black sunflower seeds.
