CAHOKIA, Ill. (AP) - The son of a slain southwestern Illinois police officer is accused of trying to kill a law enforcer.
St. Clair County prosecutors have charged 26-year-old Antonio McNamee with one count of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.
His father, Centreville police Lt. Gregory Jonas, was fatally shot in the back of the head while on duty last June outside a public housing complex. A suspect awaits trial.
Authorities say a relative of McNamee called them Friday wanting McNamee removed from a Cahokia home. When a police officer arrived, McNamee reportedly pointed a gun at him and pulled the trigger twice. The gun malfunctioned and no bullets were fired.
McNamee fled on foot but was later arrested. He is jailed in lieu of $1 million bond.
