ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in Winnebago County say a forensic anthropologist has confirmed the two tiny skeletons found in the trunk of an impounded vehicle registered to a Rockton woman were human.
The woman, 28-year-old Katie Stockton, is charged with murder in the death of a newborn girl called Baby Crystal, who was discovered frozen in December 2004.
Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia's office said Wednesday that the anthropologist found the babies were 38 to 40 weeks post conception, but had not determined their sex.
The remains were found Aug. 12 at a South Beloit impound yard where the vehicle had been sitting for about a year.
Stockton pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of first-degree homicide Sept. 16. Neither of the public defenders assigned to her case were immediately available for comment Wednesday night.
