Southern Ill. doctor sentenced on drug charges

Associated Press - December 17, 2009 11:14 AM ET

BENTON, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois doctor has been ordered to spend five years on probation and pay more than $215,000 in restitution for illegally doling out medication.

A federal judge in Benton sentenced 57-year-old Hung Nguyen (WIN) of Carmi on Wednesday, roughly three months after the doctor pleaded guilty to three counts of illegally dispensing controlled substances.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Nguyen dispensed hydrocodone - an ingredient in some painkillers - to undercover officers posing as patients at his healthcare clinic in Norris City.

Authorities say Nguyen did so beyond the scope of his professional practice and not for a legitimate medical purpose.
