JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - State officials in Mississippi have rejected a request from the Illinois-based AllState Property and Casualty Insurance Co. to more than double insurance rates for 51,000 homes statewide.
Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney sent the rejection order today after specialists reviewed the request and found a 65 percent increase was not justified.
Allstate Property and Casualty, which is based in the Chicago suburb of Northbrook, has the option of having a hearing on the matter or filing a new request for a lower increase.
In a telephone interview today, Allstate spokeswoman April Eaton did not say what the company plans to do.
