Some voters turned off by Ill. gov. campaign

Associated Press - January 31, 2010 7:14 PM ET

CHICAGO (AP) - Dan Hynes and Gov. Pat Quinn courted African-American voters today in the campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination while continuing to hurl accusations that seemed to turn off at least some of those voters.

Hynes and Quinn hopped from black church to black church in Chicago to tell worshippers about the importance of helping others.

They said state government should provide good schools and help people find jobs, and that a tax increase is a necessary evil to pay for those services.

But they also attacked one another. Quinn accused Hynes, the state comptroller, of ignoring the desecration of human remains at a black cemetery. Hynes responded that the governor was exploiting a tragedy to distract from a Hynes ad showing Chicago's first black mayor criticizing Quinn.
