University of Illinois graduate employees plan to strike Monday morning after more than six hours of negotiations failed to produce a contract agreement Saturday. Members of the Graduate Employees' Organization say the major point of contention is whether the school would promise to cover full tuition for all graduate and teaching assistants to attend the university. All other issues, including salary, were resolved at the Saturday session. University spokesperson Robin Kaler says the union made additional demands after both parties reached agreement. The union says no additional demands were made after an agreement was reached.
The union represents graduate and teaching assistants and has about 2,500 members. They teach nearly a quarter of undergrads. Kaler says the union has a right to strike, but faculty members are expected to show up to work.
More negotiations are scheduled for Tuesday.
