More rain is not welcome news for farmers, delaying their harvest even more. They were busy during those recent dry days.
The latest crop report numbers for Illinois just came out Monday. They show a significant amount of work done last week, but still behind. The soybean harvest is looking good, but the corn is not as far along as hoped. It’s is now at 52% complete in Illinois, compared to the previous' week's 31%. This time last year, it was at 87%. For soybeans, it's at 90%. The previous week, it was just at 69%. Last year at this time, it was almost done at 99%.
The reason corn is so behind is because, even though the days were dry, the crop was still wet from previous rain. With the corn being so wet, it needs to be dried, causing another problem with the propane supply. Distributors say there's not a shortage in Central Illinois. It's more Northern Illinois and Iowa, but some of those suppliers are coming here to get what they need. Evergreen FS says supplies are tight right now because propane is in such high demand. It’s taking distributors longer than normal to get their loads, but right now they are getting it.
A report from Growmark says there is concern about propane availability through the end of harvest, but that people who use propane for their homes should not be affected.
