The number of H1N1 virus cases appear to be slowing, but 35 children have died from the virus during the first week of November nationwide. Today’s focus: children that need a second dose of the H1N1 vaccine.
The Centers for Disease Control recommend kids under age nine receive two doses. That’s because they have not been exposed to H1n1 before. They don't have the antibodies to provide immunity. The doses need to be taken at least four weeks apart. So will there be enough vaccine for that?
“We are planning on having that available,” said Chief Medical Officer for St. Mary’s Hospital Dr. Maria Granzotti. “Communities are supposed to have that available, based on this recommendation. They are one of the higher age groups, so that's why it's very important for them to get the second vaccine about a month later."
St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur does not have H1N1 vaccination clinics scheduled at this time, but if you have any questions about the second dose for kids or the availability of vaccine, call your local health department.
