Senator Dick Durbin expects a vote Saturday night in the Senate on health care reform legislation.
The vote would be a first step to allow floor debate of the bill that now comes with an estimated $848 billion price tag. It includes a public insurance option but with an opt-out clause for states, and pushes back its effective date to 2014. Republicans are lining up against the measure calling any savings to the deficit "budget trickery."
The Senate version would require most people to buy insurance or shop for policies on new state-based "exchanges". Pre-existing conditions could not be denied.
