Champaign Co. man arrested for fatal hit and run

Posted: Updated:

Champaign County, IL - A Champaign County man is in jail for a deadly hit and run that killed a University of Illinois student.

Police started looking for David McClain early Tuesday morning after his Cadillac Escalade was in a crash that killed 26-year-old Yingbo Zhou. They tracked him down at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon at a home in Urbana. At that point, they had already found his SUV. State Police Sergeant Bill Emery says the Savoy man was not hurt.

McClain was arrested for reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Emery says the Drug Enforcement Administration, Urbana and Champaign Police Departments helped find McClain. McClain's Escalade crashed into a Honda Civic just before midnight on Monday. Police say he drove off, leaving behind four people who were seriously hurt, and Zhou who was pronounced dead later at Carle Hospital's emergency room. McClain racked up more than 20 traffic violations in the past ten years, most for driving an uninsured vehicle and driving while his license was suspended. The latest was just last month. He was supposed to be due back in court in December on those charges before he was arrested Tuesday.

The names of the four passengers have not been released, but they are international students. Zhou was from China. She was here as a grad student at the U of I.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. McClain has been arrested several times for driving an uninsured vehicle and driving while on a suspended license.
