Urbana, IL - Cloning credit and debit cards - it's the latest scheme to steal your banking information. Urbana Police have discovered a credit card cloning ring. Three people have been arrested.
All of the victims bought breakfast at the McDonalds on North Neil in Champaign during the first week of February. Police discovered one of the McDonald's employees was swiping customer's cards through a personal magnetic card reader to capture their financial information. The scanned information was then encoded onto other cards. Those cards were used to buy more than $10,000 worth of merchandise at Meijer and other stores.
To be clear, victims still have their physical credit or debit card on them. It was the information on it that was lifted. That's why investigators call it "credit/debit card" cloning.
If you feel you may have victimized, call Urbana Police right away.
