Decatur, IL - When a storm hits, every second counts.
If you're outside a tornado siren is supposed to warn you. They are tested monthly, but people who live in a Decatur neighborhood say they haven't heard the siren for three months.
The City of Decatur says the siren will work. The city repaired two tornado sirens that were broken. One near Phoenix Academy, and another on West Center Street. County EMA directors say for indoor alerts, you should rely on NOAA Weather Radios. You can buy one at Walgreens or Schnucks.
You can also become a trained weather spotter. The National Weather Service in Lincoln will hold a weather spotter training class Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in Clinton.
As a weather spotter, you would be in the thick of the storm to see exactly what's happening and report back to the National Weather Service. Monday's session lasts two hours at the County Courthouse Board Room in Clinton. Anyone can participate.
