Car slams into home, kills man, hurts wife

Posted:

A Mt. Zion man was killed and his wife was critically hurt after police say a speeding car slammed into their home early Sunday morning and crashed into the bedroom where they were sleeping.

The Macon County Coroner says 62-year-old David Hughes died. Family members say his wife, Shirley, is in critical condition.

Mt. Zion police say an officer tried to stop the car for a minor code violation and the driver sped off. Police say the car turned left onto North Street from Broadway then sped south on Bell Street until it left the roadway and crashed into the Hughes' home.

Police arrested the 20-year-old driver on the scene. They are investigating numerous charges against the driver including aggravated DUI involving bodily injury and reckless homicide.
