Federal stimulus package includes billions for Illinois

The U.S. House passed a massive economic stimulus package Wednesday that includes billions of dollars for Illinois. The bill now goes to the Senate, which is expected to begin debate on it as soon as Monday.

The vote for the $819 billion program was 244-188. No Republican voted for the package despite President Barack Obama personally asking for bipartisan support. Republicans insist on more tax cuts and less spending.

The Associated Press provided the following numbers on how Illinois may benefit based on tables the House Appropriations Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee released.

ILLINOIS:

Highways and Bridges -- $1 billion

Mass Transit -- $352.8 million

Other Rail -- $191.8 million

Wastewater Treatment and Sewers -- $262.5 million

Low Income Energy Assistance -- $56.4 million**

Head Start -- $29.2 million*

Schools Modernization -- $859.5 million

Education Technology Grants -- $40 million*

Preventive Health and Health Services Grants -- $7 million*

State Budget Aid -- $2.7 billion*
