Republicans and Democrats split over income tax hike

Illinois lawmakers are headed back to Springfield to work on the state's budget mess, despite a major split over how to proceed.

Senate President John Cullerton said Wednesday that the Governor and legislative leaders have agreed to call the legislature back into session next Tuesday, but he says that's the extent of the agreement. Republicans and Democrats are still split over whether to raise taxes to help avoid $9.2 billion in budget cuts. Republicans want more action on long-term changes in state spending before they'll consider raising taxes.
