Springfield woman arrested after Sunday night shooting

A single gunshot fired Sunday night leaves a middle-aged woman behind bars and another man in life-threatening condition.

52-year-old Deborah Hickman is in the Sangamon County Jail on charges of attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, armed violence, and unlawful use of a weapon. She allegedly shot a 47-year-old man in the head. The victim is still at St. Johns Hospital in critical condition, and has not yet been named by police.

The shooting happened in the 2100 block of East Adams. Police say the gunfire resulted from tensions between neighbors that had been simmering for weeks. Police believe a fight between four people took place, and the victim tried to step in and break it up. Hickman is the grandmother of one of the boys involved in the fight. She's well-known in the area, and neighborhood children call her the ‘Candy Lady', because she sells soda and candy to neighbors.

Following the shooting, Springfield Police conducted a search of her home and recovered a total of 8 weapons, including two rifles.
