Homeless Council Continuum of Care Meeting
Social service providers, businesses and individuals interested in the issues surrounding homelessness in Macon County are invited to attend the Homeless Council Continuum of Care Meeting on Thursday, January 14, at 1:30 p.m., at the Salvation Army, 137 S. Church, Conference Room, Decatur. Call 362-7700 for more information.
The Homeless Council has been in existence since 1995 and works to identify and meet the needs of homeless individuals and families in Macon County. The council addresses the continuum of need, covering all topics from homelessness prevention to permanent housing and everything in between.
BABES Volunteer Training scheduled
BABES, Beginning Awareness Basic Education Studies, is a program sponsored by Dove, Inc., which brings worthwhile life skill lessons to children in grades K-3rd, in Macon county schools. BABES is seeking additional volunteers to cover all of the classrooms requesting this valuable program for this winter/spring semester. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of 5 to 9 year olds, please attend a BABES Volunteer training on Tuesday, January 12, 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, January 20, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This volunteer commitment is usually an hour a week for six weeks and that covers two classrooms. The presentations are made in pairs. Bring a friend who can be your partner or be teamed with a person during the training. Pieces of Love
Pieces of Love is an organizations of volunteers who make warm afghans for people staying at Dove's Domestic Violence Shelter and who are participant with the Homeward Bound Program, individuals seeking help with homelessness issues.
Pieces of Love needs more 7X9" pieces, knitted or crocheted to make kits for afghans. Come join us at our next workshop, January 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Christ United Methodist Church, 1503 N. Summit, Decatur. You can stay as long as you choose or pick up a kit and be on your way!
Tax Counseling Project
The Tax Counseling Project of the Center for Center for Economic Progress will again be coming to Decatur. The Decatur Public Library,130 N. Franklin Street, will be the host site for the project. The program is sponsored jointly by the Center for Economic Progress, Dove, Inc., the Decatur Public Library, and Millikin University.
Volunteers utilize the Project's software to electronically file taxes for those seeking services. The free tax preparation service will be offered:
Tuesdays, January 26 through April 13, 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Thursdays, January 28 through March 4 & April 15, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Saturdays, January 30 through April 10, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This free service is provided for families with incomes of less than $50,000 and individuals with an income less than $25,000. Taxpayers must bring the following items to the site: all W-2's, 1099's, Social Security Cards for all dependents, a valid picture I.D. and any other tax information. If you have a prior year return, bring it also. If you want your return deposited directly into a bank account, please bring your account number and bank routing number.
