Urbana school board tentatively agrees on cuts

Urbana School Board leaders are beginning to make a list of potential cuts to deal with tight budget times.

In a three hour meeting Saturday, the board tentatively agreed to 1.3 million dollars in cuts. That still leaves about $700,000 left to trim.

The preliminary cuts include six full-time elementary school teachers, the district's public relations director, two middle school special education teachers and summer academic counseling. These are not official cuts, but the board calls them a starting point.

The board agreed to take a closer look at some more controversial proposed cuts including parent liaisons and one-to-one mentoring.

The board will meet next March 9 at 7:30 pm. Two other meetings have also been scheduled before the vote March 16.
