CHAMPAIGN, IL - On May 1, 2011, at approximately 4:36 p.m., Champaign police officers responded to Market Place Mall for a report of a reckless vehicle containing a passenger in possession of a gun.
A witness reported seeing the vehicle near the food court at mall. When officers arrived at the mall to locate the vehicle, they heard shots fired and then observed an active shooter firing multiple rounds at a male subject.
At this time, two officers responded to the incident, just north of the food court, and fired shots at the armed male in an effort to stop him from continuing to shoot the other male. The subject was wounded and medical attention was immediately summoned. Both subjects were transported to Carle Hospital for treatment of gunshot injuries. The subjects' conditions are unknown and charges are pending.
During the course of the investigation Market Place Mall security personnel along with a team of officers from the University of IL police, Champaign County Sheriff's, Urbana Police, IL State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations responded to the scene to assist with the investigation and to secure the mall.
Vehicles parked near the scene of the crime were also secured for evidence and checked for occupants. No further injuries were reported to police. Several subjects who were present in the area have been detained to determine their level of involvement in this case. Police are also interviewing witnesses and will provide more information as it becomes available.
Both officers involved in the shooting will be interviewed about this case. In accordance with departmental policy, the officers will be placed on Investigative Leave with an internal investigation to follow.
