DECATUR, IL- Decatur Police arrested a man Thursday evening after he allegedly shot a stolen pistol in the air and ran from police.
According to sworn statements, Decatur Police were called out just before 5:30 p.m. to the 1500 block of North Morgan Street in reference to a shots fired call.
When officers arrived on scene, they found a man and woman standing in the alley behind North Morgan. Police say when they attempted to make contact with the man, later identified as 35 year-old Jeffrey Johnson, he ran into a residence at 1564 North Martin Luther King.
An officer gave chase and says while he was waiting for other officers to arrive he heard a gun shot come from inside the residence on MLK.
Before other officers arrived, Johnson allegedly fled the house through the front door and was taken into custody at 543 East Division following a short foot chase.
Police say witnesses told them Johnson was firing a pistol wildly into the air near the 500 block of East Waggoner. Police searched the residence on MLK and allegedly found a stolen semi automatic .9 mm pistol.
Johnson has been charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, resisting arrest, reckless discharge of a firearm and being an armed habitual criminal. His bail is set at $500,000.
Johnson has an extensive criminal record, with felony convictions for obstruction, cocaine possession, weapons charges and aggravated DUI.
