SPRINGFIELD - The National Checker Car Club of America National Convention will take place in Springfield June 16 – 18, 2011. Over 20 classic Checker Cars will be in town for the convention. The public can view these classic cars on June 18 from 1:00 pm -4:00 pm at the Travelodge, located at 3751 S.6th Street, and from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm at the Rock N Roll Hardees, located at 2501 Adlai Stevenson Drive.
"Car lovers will find many unique and unusual Checkers when they come to the public viewing events," said Ron Leatz, Club President. "We'll have a 1963 Checker Perkins Diesel, only a half dozen were ever manufactured; an early 1980's Checker that runs on propane and a 6 door Aerobus, to name a few." Checker Motors was primarily a commercial transportation company, most known for their taxi cabs. The company began producing vehicles for the consumer market in 1960 with the Superba and the Marathon in 1962. There will be Marathons at the convention as well. Former Illinois Governor James Thompson was fan of Checker vehicles. Thompson used two Checker Marathons during his terms as Governor as his official limousine.
Local coordinator and club secretary, John Weinhoft is excited to have the group come to Springfield. "Springfield is the perfect location for a car convention," says Weinhoft. With Springfield's Route 66 connection and our Abraham Lincoln attractions, we're looking forward to a very entertaining weekend." The group will visit Route 66 sites in Springfield and the surrounding area including The Cozy Dog Drive In, Shea's Gas Station Museum and the Route 66 Drive In. They'll also visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Lincoln Home National Historic Site. "The Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau actively pursues car and truck events," said Tim Farley, Executive Director. "These events are a win-win for Springfield. Car convention coordinators frequently rank Springfield as their best attended show and locals really enjoy coming out to see the cars."
