Police Investigate Decatur's 7th Murder of 2011


DECATUR - A 17-year-old Decatur girl is dead after a shooting Saturday night. Macon County Coroner Michael Day said in a release that Mishyra Wheeler was pronounced dead at Decatur Memorial Hospital just after 12 a.m. Sunday.

Wheeler's autopsy was completed just after 4 p.m. In a release, the Coroner said Wheeler died due to the massive damage she sustained to her heart and lungs after being shot in the back.

Police responded to a call in the 1500 block of North Church Street at about 11:34 Saturday evening. Upon arriving, police found four shooting victims. They were transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Decatur Police Lt. Cody Moore said there is no discernible motive for the shooting at this time.

The identities of two of the gunshot victims, Gregory Lewis, age 38 (multiple wounds to the legs), and Johnny Taylor, age 26 (wound to leg), have been released. A 15 year old girl was also shot (wounds to the legs and arm) but her name has not been released. Decatur Police Detectives are investigating the shooting and have interviewed several people. No arrests have been made. Preliminary information suggests all four of the victims were at 1502 North Church Street when they were approached by unknown subjects and multiple gunshots were fired.

This is Decatur's 7th murder in 2011. A coroner's inquest into the death of Mishyra Wheeler is pending.
