CHAMPAIGN - A new law went into effect Tuesday.
Adopted adults can now get their original birth certificate.
Adoption attorney Ellyn Bullock says the state is trying to break away from the idea that adoptions must be hidden.
Bullock says adoptees should have the right to find their past because identity is so important to them.
There's a growing trend in Illinois that emphasizes open adoption and Bullock says this law is another step in that direction.
To get an original copy of a birth certificate, contact the Department of Public Health in Springfield.
All original birth certificates from Illinois adoption cases can be found there.
