DECATUR, IL- For many, the holiday season can be expensive due to the recession or the loss of a job. That is where Operation Sleighbell comes in, providing low-cost gift options for those in need.
The organization was started in 1984 by the Reverend Rick Smith of Champaign. Operation Sleighbell allows people to buy Christmas gifts for a modest donation of $1 per item.
Volunteers from the West Side Church of the Nazarene in Decatur have been working all year to get ready for this year's shoppers.
Pastor Lyle Artman says there has been an increase in the number of people using Operation Sleighbell this year.
Operation Sleighbell has stores located in Decatur at the old Schnucks at Water and Pershing, in Champaign at 2801 Gemini Court, in Danville at 2613 North Vermilion and in Mattoon at 1900 Western Avenue. Registration for shopping appointments has closed for this year, but Operation Sleighbell will be open to the general public on Thursday, December 8, starting at 1 p.m.
