Artillery shell removed from central Ill. tavern

Posted:

TOLONO, Ill. (AP) -- The afternoon ended with a bang for one central Illinois tavern.

Ed Gregg, owner of Lu & Denny's tavern in Tolono, says he was cleaning Tuesday afternoon when he came across what looked like an old artillery shell.

The University of Illinois bomb squad and Champaign police confirmed his suspicions and sent in a robot to retrieve it.

University of Illinois police Capt. Skip Frost tells the (Champaign) News-Gazette (http://bit.ly/AtZJMG) the artillery round was more than 40 years old.

Gregg says it was about 10 inches tall and 5 to 7 pounds. He says his mother brought it from his grandmother's house.

Traffic north of town was diverted for about two hours as the bomb team detonated the shell, which Frost says wasn't live.
