CHAMPAIGN, IL- Drivers in Champaign will soon pay more at the pump now that city council members voted in favor of a tax increase on gas.
Starting May 1, there will be a four cent per gallon tax increase.
Many drivers in Champaign are not happy about this tax and say they will either cut back on gas or travel to a nearby town to fill up.
Council member Tom Bruno says the money from the tax will be used for road improvement projects. He says if the city does not fix the roads now, soon whole streets could begin to deteriorate.
The tax will raise about $1.5 million each year.
