Gov. Quinn Noncommittal On Handgun Registration

Posted:

SPRINGFIELD, IL- Governor Pat Quinn says the idea of requiring all Illinois handgun owners to register their weapons would be an "uphill climb" with state lawmakers.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants registration for all handguns. He says that would help police track guns that flow into Chicago from elsewhere and wind up being used in crimes.

Quinn said Friday that he thinks it is more important to focus on trying to ban assault weapons. "Dealing with assault weapons: that's where my focus is," Quinn said. "I think we should ban assault weapons in our state, and I think it has the ability to get a majority of legislators behind it."

Quinn didn't say whether he supports or opposes the idea of registering all handguns.
