CHAMPAIGN - Champaign-Urbana voters head to polling places on March 20th, they will see a referendum for municipal electric aggregation.
This means voters get to decide if they want the cities to buy power in bulk so people can pay less on their electric bill.
Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing says the cities would buy power from an outside supplier. at a more affordable rate for the average household, as well as very small businesses.
Right now Ameren has a default rate for customers at 6.3 cents per kilowatt hour.
With the pooling of people's accounts, the city would negotiate with another company to get the rate down to the 4-cent range.
This would save people about 125 dollars on their electric bill each year if the referendum passes.
Champaign Planning Director Bruce Knight says the ballot question looks complicated so people can visit their website www.powervotecu.com to see the referendum question before voting.
