Springfield - Soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan were honored by family members and the Illinois National Guard today in Springfield.
Wreaths were placed at the Fallen Soldier's monument to recognize men and women who gave their lives serving their country.
The ceremony was just part of an all day event held in partnership with the Illinois Connections of Families of the Fallen.
That organization helps bring families of those who were killed in combat together to talk and cope with one another.
The group's chairman, Bob Gillmore, says Saturday's event is something that helps all family members keep their loved ones memories alive.
"It's not just the kids, it's the parents, it's the wives, the brothers, the sisters, extended families. They need to make connections as well and this gives us an opportunity to bring them all together," says Gillmore.
A special balloon release ceremony was also held today. Names of the fallen soldiers were attached to the balloons that were released by family members.
