Mt. Zion Firefighters Thank Community's Support After Fire

Posted:

MT. ZION, Ill. -- Mt. Zion firefighters are hurting after flames and smoke caused millions of dollars in damage at their firehouse. WAND got a closer look at the destruction Sunday.

Firefighters say it doesn't feel like home there anymore, after a fire tore through the building early Saturday morning.

Mt. Zion Fire Chief Don Wrights said they're getting through it with help from other local fire departments, but they're also moved by the community's support.

"People [have been] coming by giving us food, water, stuff to drink," Wright said. "We don't even know where all of it came from."

Strangers were also stopping by Saturday, offering to take dirty equipment to the car wash.

The fire department says they're ready to start repairs as soon as possible. The insurance company will be out assessing the damage Monday.
