
Springfield, IL - New information has been released about the officer involved fatal shooting we first told you about Friday night. Illinois State Police say an officer shot 25 year old Douglas Smith in the head at the Comfort Inn near Veterans Parkway. When Springfield Police Officers were called to the scene Friday around 3 p.m. Smith was described as a transient who was possibly suicidal with a weapon. Illinois State Police Commander Todd Kilby shared what happened next, "They attempted to make contact with the individual here. They located what room he was in.. did make contact with the individual. Were confronted by an armed individual and at that time there was gunfire."
A hotel guest said he heard two or three gunshots fired. Smith was then rushed to Springfield Memorial Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy was performed Saturday in Bloomington by the Sangamon County Coroner and the preliminary report suggests that Smith died from a single gunshot wound to the head. Police say his last known address was in Bellevue, Nebraska. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and we will continue to bring you updates as we learn more.
