DECATUR, IL- Police say summer is normally a time when gun violence starts to increase. Now, a family in Decatur who lost a child in a drive-by shooting is helping kids make safer choices this summer.
Brandon Reed was shot and killed back in 2007, but his family has taken that tragedy and used it as an opportunity to help other kids.
The family says they hope to get kids focused on education and they plan to do that by drawing them out to the baseball field.
The Brandon Reed Scholarship helps kids go to college and now it is also helping sponsor a little league team in Decatur.
Organizers say the baseball team is just one way kids can stay safe and have fun throughout the summer.
Brandon's family members say they plan to sponsor a baseball team every year to give kids scholarships to help them get in the league.
The team's first game is Monday night at Oak Grove at 6 p.m.
