27 Dogs Recovering After House Seizure

CHARLESTON -- Twenty-seven dogs are recovering at the Coles County Animal Shelter after being rescued from a rural Lerna home last week.

Shelter Manager Julie Deters said the shelter received a call from someone urging them to check on the home. They obtained a search warrant and found dogs on chains and in pens.

"The smell of urine and feces was overwhelming," Deters said, adding that the dogs had no food or water.

Now the family of rat terriers, Jack Russell terriers and Yorkies are recovering together and looking for new homes.

"We want to give them a second chance," Deters said. "Let them know what it's like to have a home and to be loved."

Twenty-two of the 27 dogs are ready for adoption right now.
