URBANA - As a result of the accidental shooting death Wednesday night in Urbana, WAND talked to a local gun expert about what gun owners need to know and teach their kids.
Dave's Firearms & Cycle Repair owner Dave Costley says the most important part of owning a gun is teaching kids about the dangers.
Let them know it's not a toy like what they see on tv, movies and video games.
Also Costley says make sure to keep the gun unloaded and locked inside a safe that kids cannot open.
He says parents must understand their firearm and make sure their kids understand how destructive it can be.
It's also a good idea to get a gun lock to apply to the gun.
Local police departments usually give gun locks away for free.
