DECATUR -- It's the end of one era for the Decatur Boys & Girls Club. Long-time executive director Walt Smith is retiring.
For 34 years, Smith has called it home. But he says he's walking away learning a lot.
"Kids are resilient," Smith said. "They will meet your expectations and give you that 110 percent."
By giving them time, patience and something to do... Smith said kids can meet expectations with the "appropriate support and encouragement."
Saturday was a community celebration honoring Smith and his work with the club. But the focus was still where it's always been -- on the kids.
"It's all about them being able to reach out and touch you," Smith said. "Them being able to see you have a genuine concern for their well-being."
Smith says his legacy is leaving the club for the community to enjoy. The Boys & Girls Club says it will never turn any kid away, and are always taking new members.
