
URBANA, IL- A 14 year-old Urbana boy charged with reckless homicide in connection with the shooting death of his 3 year-old nephew has been released to his mother's custody.
Police say the teen was playing with a gun when he accidentally shot 3 year-old Mekhi Woods. The shooting happened at a home in the 900 block of East Pennsylvania Avenue last Wednesday.
The teen was originally held on involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon charges, but the state's attorney says he is now charged with reckless homicide.
Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz says the teen must be "in the care and custody of a responsible adult at all times." He is due back in court for a status hearing June 1.
A second suspect, 17 year-old Dequan Fenderson, has also been charged for his alleged involvement in the shooting.
