DECATUR- It's a plan that's been in the works for nearly ten years now: a memorial to remember those in Decatur who lived and died during World War II. But after a delay, now that plan's about to become reality.
With a unanimous vote the city council has allowed the memorial to start construction in front of the Decatur Civic Center.
Back in April, the memorial committee had a ceremonial groundbreaking. They wanted to have construction complete by Memorial Day. But the extra time will allow them to make improvements. The committee is elated about the project moving forward
The memorial's price tag of well over 300-thousand dollars was raised through private donations and a state grant. And with the council's approval Monday, now actual demolition and construction can begin.
They were hoping to have it complete by the Decatur Celebration, but it looks like it will be finished at the beginning of September.
