Pension Reform Being Discussed

Springfield, Ill - Cutting state pension costs is on the agenda Wednesday as Governor Pat Quinn meets with legislative leaders.

Senate President John Cullerton wants to pass measures where there is broad agreement and keep negotiating on the other pieces.

Lawmakers came close to hammering out an agreement last month but it was derailed.

The biggest dispute is over whether to force suburban Chicago schools take over the cost of pensions for their employees. The state pays those expenses now.

Public sector retirement systems in Illinois are $85,000,000 short on money.
