Family, friends shoot to remember fallen officer Myron Deckard

DANVILLE -- It has now been 11 years since Vermilion County Sergeant Myron Deckard, 72, was killed by a prisoner in Macon County.

Even though friends and family say it's still like a fresh wound sometimes, Sunday was about having fun at the shooting range.  And it was a packed house at the Danville Rifle & Pistol Club.

People of all ages were there shooting rounds in Deckard's honor.  The fallen officer was driving on I-72 in Macon County, transporting a prisoner back to Vermilion County.  The prisoner freed himself from handcuffs and forced Deckard to drive off the road, shot him twice and killed him.

Deckard's granddaughter, Melissa Johnson, says the family still has tough days.

"I just miss him so much," Johnson said.  "He would give his heart and soul for anybody."

All the money raised at the shoot is going towards the Myron Deckard Memorial Scholarship Fund.  The scholarships benefit families of law enforcement at Danville Area Community College.
