First Lady Lincoln's Life is Basis for Curriculum

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The life of a former first lady will serve as inspiration for new curriculum in Illinois schools.

State officials and educators will convene later this month at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield to examine the life of Mary Todd Lincoln and use it to develop new course work for high school students.

Officials say the three-day session will serve as fodder for new social studies material.

The Illinois State Board of Education is sponsoring the curriculum development session as part of it year-long series for public events surrounding Lincoln's life.

Officials say that students have much to learn about issues of mental health, the Civil War, the White House and apparel of the 1800s by looking through eyes of Lincoln.
