Raccoons Invade Courthouse

DANVILLE - Raccoons are running wild in the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex.

Vermilion County Clerk Lynn Foster says the situation is dangerous.

Tuesday morning staff found paw prints in the first floor hallway.

The county treasurer found droppings on top of the mailroom machine.

Animal control set up traps to try and catch them.

Foster says they also had raccoons in the ceiling last fall.

Vermilion County Animal Control caught 4 or 5 raccoons and released them into the wild.

Foster believes the raccoons are coming into the basement through old underground steam tunnels that lead to an empty building next door.

She and the Vermilion County Board Chairman are working to close up these underground tunnels so the raccoons don't continue to roam the building.
