Defending State Ban On Gay Marriages

Effingham - Effingham County Clerk Kerry Hirtzel and his counterpart in Tazewell County are asking a judge for permission to defend the state's ban on gay marriages.

The Clerk wants to intervene in a lawsuit seeking to overturn the ban, because of the Cook Count State's Attorney, and Attorney General Lisa Madigan have refused to defend it.

The Thomas more society, which filed the request says the county clerks have an interest in the case because they issue marriage licenses.
